Photochemistry Simulator – Light-Driven Reactions Online
Photochemistry studies how light absorption promotes molecules to excited electronic states, enabling reactions thermally forbidden in the dark. This simulation covers the Jablonski diagram, fluorescence and phosphorescence, photoisomerization, and the primary photochemical steps of photosynthesis, connecting photon energy (E = hν) to bond breaking and forming.
What you can do in this simulation
- Visualize the Jablonski diagram: absorption, internal conversion, fluorescence, and phosphorescence pathways
- Adjust incident light wavelength and observe which electronic transitions are allowed for a molecule
- Trigger cis-trans photoisomerization of a model alkene and compare ground- vs. excited-state PES
- Trace primary photochemical events of the light-dependent reactions in photosynthesis
- Measure quantum yield by comparing photons absorbed to product molecules formed
Concepts covered
Jablonski diagram · excited state · fluorescence and phosphorescence · quantum yield · photoisomerization · photon energy E = hν
