Torque & Balance Simulator: Seesaw, Moments & Levers
This torque simulator makes rotational equilibrium hands-on. Each weight on the beam creates a torque τ = m·g·d — its weight times its distance from the central pivot — and the beam tips toward whichever side has the larger total torque, sitting level only when the two sides are equal. Pick a mass and click a numbered spot to place it (left side red, right side blue); the beam tilts live and a card shows the left and right torques and the verdict. The key insight appears immediately: a light mass far from the pivot can balance a heavy mass close in, because torque depends on the moment arm, not weight alone — exactly why a child balances an adult on a seesaw and why wrenches have long handles. Predict which way a random arrangement tips, or hunt for the arrangement that sits perfectly level.
What you can do in this simulation
- Place 1, 2, or 5 kg weights anywhere along a pivoted beam and watch it tilt live toward the heavier torque
- A torque card shows left vs right N·m and the verdict (tips left, tips right, or balanced)
- Discover the balance law m₁·d₁ = m₂·d₂ — balance a heavy mass near the pivot with a light one far out
- Predict mode: call left / right / balanced for a random arrangement, with a score
- See torque = force × moment arm: sliding a weight outward increases its turning effect
